This is the ideal sauce to eat with their fried shrimp. Heck, it’s good with just about anything on their menu. I love garlic and I could eat just about anything with more of it, so of course I enjoyed the garlic tartar sauce. It’s not overwhelmingly garlic-y either. There’s just enough of it to taste the garlic.
Popeyes Creole Cocktail Sauce is basically spicy cocktail sauce. Cocktail sauce is basically chunky ketchup. It’s similar to salsa, but I would say that between salsa and ketchup, it still leans more in flavor profile to ketchup.
The thing about this sauce is that it makes me wonder why all cocktail sauce doesn’t have an element of spice to it, like with salsa. Spicy cocktail sauce should be the default way to serve the sauce. Without it, it’s like eating chunky ketchup.
Overall, a good sauce that goes well enough with the fried shrimp, though I think the garlic tartar sauce is superior. The ideal medium for this sauce would likely be the shrimp po boy sandwiches they occasionally have on their menu.
Popeyes cole slaw is… awful. It’s just not good. And yet I always get it because it’s simply the most appetizing vegetable anything at Popeyes. It’s got some citrus or lemon which helps with all the deep fried food. I’m still going to order it in the future, but I’m only doing it because I have no choice. If only they had a side salad or any kind of better vegetable side dish instead of this mound of slop. The main thing redeeming the cole slaw is that the green beans are worse.
Hands down the best fast food biscuit I’ve ever had. No other fast food restaurant comes close (Red Lobster has better biscuits, but that is arguably fast casual or sit down). One of these biscuits tastes like there’s a whole stick of butter in each biscuit and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The only downside is that trying to eat these without a glass of water nearby is a health hazard. These things are amazing at clogging your windpipe.
Wicked Shrimp is Popeyes answer to their lackluster popcorn shrimp. It is seemingly larger shrimp with some spice and flavor added to it. It’s spicy without being overwhelming, which would be difficult to over spice because it is frozen shrimp and flavor does get lost over time.
Overall, this was okay. It’s certainly better than their popcorn shrimp, which are small and mostly batter. This is still mostly batter, but the shrimp are bigger and have more flavor. It’s also priced pretty well. I got a five dollar Surf and Turf box where I got it Wicked Shrimp, chicken tenders, a biscuit and a small side. Not bad for five dollars.
