Details: Played for about thirteen hours. Official site is https://themessengergame.com/
Edit: When I wrote this review, I did not beat the game. I have since beaten it and my review still stands. It’s a fun game, but flawed and mostly appeals to nostalgia. I bumped the score up from 6/10 to 6.3/10.
The Messenger is a game that tries to emulate older games like Ninja Gaiden (for the Nintendo and Super Nintendo era). I started out enjoying the game, but lost interest about halfway because it forces a cardinal sin in video games, which is forcing players to backtrack through levels they’ve already played before. There is a ton of backtracking in this game and after about seven hours of playtime, I just didn’t care about this game anymore.
Details: Took my about three hours to play through. More information can be found at https://playdead.com/
Limbo is a puzzle platformer that takes about three hours to get through. There’s no real story to it. It’s mostly atmosphere and puzzles. Because it’s so short, there’s not much to say other than that it was fun. I got it for free off the Epiq Games Store so I can’t complain about the price either. It was a quick, fun game. If you can get it for free, I’d recommend giving it a play through. I probably wouldn’t buy it though. It’s not that great.
Details: Played through it in about two and a half hours. More information can be found at https://playdead.com/games/inside/
Inside is a a relatively short platformer with a few puzzles in it. It was okay.
Details: Played on the 3DS. Around five hours to beat the main game, around eleven hours for the secret levels, and around twenty hours to complete everything according to howlongtobeat.com. More information can be found at https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/new-super-mario-bros-2-3ds/
New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a standard two dimensional side scroller. It doesn’t add anything new like in Super Mario Odyssey. It just plays like a game from the 1990’s, except with slightly better visuals.
Additionally, Gold Edition simply means it was bundled with all additional downloadable content into on purchasable package.
Details: Originally released in 2005. Got the game for free through http://www.humblebundle.com. Beat the game in about twelve hours. Played on PC through Steam.
Despite the passage of time, Psychonauts holds up surprisingly well. The game is reminiscent of the old 3D platformers that used to rule the consoles two system generations ago. Psychonauts is a dated, but fun game that I enjoyed very much. There were moments that were confusing or frustrating, but that did not take away from the overall experience for me.
