Movie Review: xXx: The Return of Xander Cage

Score: 5.5/10

This is one of the worst action movies I’ve seen in recent memory. The main problem here is Vin Diesel.

A super weapon that can bring down satellites onto people like meteors is stolen. Now it’s up to an unorthodox, EXTREME secret agent to get it back.

The original XXX movie that also starred Vin Diesel tried to differentiate itself from other action movies by focusing on stunts involving extreme sports. That means set pieces involving snow boarding, sky diving, motorbikes, etc.

The problem in this movie is that Vin Diesel got old. He can’t do stunts. He can’t even act. I don’t know what happened, but his voice just changed from deep and serious to old and croaky. Vin Diesel now sounds like that great uncle you had that retired to Boca. There’s just a cringe worthy quality to his voice now that makes all the “cool” lines he tries to deliver sound ridiculous.

The rest of the cast is actually pretty amazing. Donny Yen is a legend, but there aren’t enough hand to hand combat scenes to warrant his presence. Tony Jaa is here, but is underutilized as well. Michael Bisping was here so I expected to see more hand to hand combat scenes. I barely saw any. There just weren’t enough practical stunts and too much computer generated special effects. In a post John Wick world, action movies as fake as this have no place. Plus, despite Yen and Jaa being fantastic action stars, they are horrendous actors. Under utilizing these guys for action scenes just made their acting look worse.

There are also a bunch of actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Nina Dobrev and Ruby Rose. They’re all okay at their roles I guess. They certainly aren’t going to win any Academy Awards for this movie. Also, there’s not much you can do with a generic, uninteresting story like this.

Overall, this movie wasn’t good. They had the potential to do a lot with this cast, but they didn’t do much. Don’t watch this.
