Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu – Hyouketsu no Kizuna is the second OVA for the popular Re:Zero series. It’s okay. The production quality is good, but the story itself made me feel nothing as it takes place far before the events of the main series. As a fan of Re:Zero, I only really care about the protagonist and the premise of the main series.
Frozen Bonds takes place long before the main series and focuses on Emilia. It’s more of an origin story for her and has nothing to do with any of the other main characters from the main series.
The story tries to be sad and solemn, but the unfortunate thing is that people like Re:Zero because they liked the premise of being able to relive moments again after the protagonist dies. That’s the main draw. I don’t really care about any of the other characters except in that context. So that there is no supernatural twist to this story is a little dull.
The animation is great and the voice acting is great.
Overall, I can’t really find any major faults in this OVA, but I still found very little I liked about it. It’s got good production values, it’s just not a compelling story and it doesn’t really have all that much to do with the main series.
