Manhwa Review: A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special

Details: Korean name is 귀환자의 마법은 특별해야 합니다.

Score: 7/10

A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special is a Korean web comic based on a series of light novels. It’s another fantasy story that follows a lot of the same tropes of contemporary Asian fantasy stories. I’m mostly addicted to these types of stories so I enjoyed it. This comic is currently ongoing.

The story takes place in a fantasy world where shadow rifts open up and heroes must go in and conquer them. After a group of heroes defeats one of these shadow rifts, an explosion sends one of the party members back into the past, years before the current events occur. Now this hero has decided to relive his life and strengthening himself and his allies in hopes of preventing the many deaths that occurred in the timeline he originally came from.

As said above there are a lot of fantasy/isekai tropes going on here. Our protagonist is overpowered since he traveled back in time with the knowledge and training that he originally lived through. He has knowledge of many events before they happen so he knows exactly how to act to counter certain events. It’s all pretty standard stuff for the genre.

The big kicker here is that this is likely the second best drawn Korean comic I’ve read. The best drawn Korean comic I’ve read is Solo Leveling. That art alone is enough to keep me interest. I also like the fantasy/isekai genre so there’s that.

Overall, this is a cookie cutter genre story that offers nothing that isn’t already offered in the other hundreds of fantasy/isekai stories out there. If you’re a sucker for the genre like I am, you’ll still likely enjoy this comic.

I think you missed out a lot in this review. The mc isn’t powerful like other protags in fact he is considered weak in many ways and the upper hand he has is only knowledge which is also the only upper hand he had in his original world. I think this that it does follow the common trope of returning back in time and being more powerful than others but its done much better than some of the other manhwas of the same trope. The characters are written a lot better too in my opinion. I think the art is really good too as you said but that isn’t the only good thing and this is should be in anyone’s top manhwas. I will also give you a benefit of doubt here since the time you reviewed this was one the story hadn’t developed much but it is a disgrace to the author to call this a 7.
I think this deserves a minimum of 8.5 if not 9 (9 is my score)

Also I would like to add a major thing I forgot about how this manhwa draws comparison to real world in terms of inequality and multiple factions and politics. Also the villain are really good with separate personalities and motive. I think most manhwas of the isekai or the whole ‘returning to the past’ trope either don’t even or can’t accomplish all of the things I have listed here that RSBS successfully does.
