Happy Death Day 2U is the sequel to Happy Death Day. It returns with the horror aspects of the first movie, but adds in substantially more comedy and drama.
Happy Death Day 2U picks up exactly the next day after the events of the first movie. We discover the cause of the repeating day Tree went through yesterday and through a lab accident, Tree is sent into an alternate dimension where, again, she is murdered and must repeat the day over and over again.
The big change here is that the primary focus isn’t on her murder, it’s on trying to figure out how to get back to her own dimension. The dimension she’s sent to is a parallel dimension where things aren’t quite the same. In fact, many things are better. Much of the drama is set around whether she even wants to returns home.
There is certainly more comedy in this sequel than in the last movie. There is some horror elements and the murder must be solved, it just takes a back seat to funnier and more dramatic elements.
Jessica Rothe is still fun and very animated as Tree.
Overall, this was a fun movie, though not as good as the first. You can tell that they were really milking the cash cow that was born from the success of the first movie. Even still, I had fun with this movie.
