Manga Review: Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku

Details: You can read it at https://www.viz.com/shonenjump/chapters/hells-paradise-jigokuraku

Jigokuraku is an action oriented manga with some nudity and gore-y action. There isn’t too much of a story or high emotional notes. This is a battle royale oriented comic where the main attraction is simply trying to figure out who is the strongest.

The story takes place in feudal Japan. A group of the most dangerous criminals, each paired with one of the most dangerous samurai of the time are tasked to go to an island in search of the elixir of eternal life. Many have traveled there before but none have returned whole. Now these criminals and samurai will begin what is likely a suicide mission into a mystical island rife with dangers.

The art is great, although there are times where so much is going on it’s hard to comprehend the art. The art is generally detailed and fluid. Lots of action packed panels.

The general flow of the story draws on some aspects of mythology from Asia. There are some familiar elements that reminded me of One Piece and Dragon Ball like the use of energy or ki.

Overall, this was a fun read. Don’t expect too much and just enjoy the action.

Score: 7/10
