Mothership Meat Company is a relatively new barbecue place that opened in Long Island City. The food is just okay. I think the most attractive thing about this place is the location and how comfortable the space was.
What’s interesting about the menu is that there are no combos or set meals. All the meat is sold by weight. As a result, you can order just about any amount of anything. If you want to try a small piece of everything, you can do that. The only exception is the sausage, which is only sold one whole sausage link at a time.
I tried the brisket (a slice was about four dollars), the prime rib (a slice was about four dollars), the pork ribs (a single piece cost me about six dollars), the beef shoulder (which cost me about five dollars), and a sausage link (which cost eight dollars each). I also got the cheese corn and potato salad (a small size of each side is five dollars), pictured below.
The food was pretty average. It was better than some lower end, lackluster barbecue. John Brown Smokehouse is superior and it is also in Long Island City. The best thing I got here was the beef shoulder and some of the pork belly that my friend let me try.
All of the sides here were pretty terrible. The potato salad was the kind with no mayo, which sucked. It was pretty flavorless. The cheesy corn was too cheesy. I get that it is a sort of creative mix of corn and macaroni and cheese, but it still sucked. I think I would’ve just preferred corn on the cob or macaroni and cheese separately. I also tried the baked beans, which wasn’t amazing.
The service was very nice and the space is nice. They have a large outdoor area that is perfect for sitting in on a summer day.
Overall, the food here was just okay. It’s a great place to hangout and get some drinks though. If you want quality barbecue in Long Island City, I’d recommend going with John Brown Smokehouse. Mothership Meat Company is more convenient to travel to since it’s near the Queensboro Plaza subway station.
