For the last few years, Lucia has been the only option for western style pizza in downtown Flushing. Everything else closed down. Which is unfortunate because sometimes you want some New York City style pizza, not that stuff from Dominos or Papa Johns or any of those other fast food franchises. This is why the opening of Rosa’s Pizza is welcome.
Rosa’s Pizza is a tiny location. The only real option is to get pizza to go. Lucia is better in that regard. Lucia also has a better regular slice which costs $2.50. A regular slice at Rosa’s costs $2.75.
However, Rosa’s is superior in the options it provides. Lucia’s pretty much makes a regular slice and a fairly garbage Sicilian slice. That’s it. Everything else they make takes a butt load of time because nothing is ready. The end result is that if you want some food fast, you either get a slice or a Sicilian slice. Rosa’s does better in this regard.
Rosa’s has the Sicilian, the reverse Sicilian, the grandma slice, a slice with broccoli, the vodka slice, the Margherita slice, sausage rolls, etc. Basically, Rosa’s has infinitely more options than Lucia.
Personally, my favorite type of New York City slice is the grandma slice. I love the garlic and tomato sauce on the cheese rather than the other way around. Usually, I have to go to Manhattan to get it. Now, I don’t have to schlep out to the city for it.
Overall, the pizza isn’t extraordinary, but it is necessary. Lucia has too few options. With Rosa’s downtown Flushing finally gets some New York City style pizzeria food, even if you can only get it to go.
