Movie Review: Dragon Ball Super: Broly

There are few things that have been with me longer than Dragon Ball. I used to wake up early at six in the morning and watch this show with the volume on low, just so I wouldn’t wake anyone up. Suffice it to say, I’m going to be a Dragon Ball fan no matter how many years go by (still not going to watch GT though). So if you tell me there is now an official Dragon Ball movie from creator Akira Toriyama that makes Broly canon, then I’m already on board.

The story takes place after the most recent events in Dragon Ball Super and the multi-verse tournament. Goku and Vegeta are training when Frieza finds a most promising Saiyan who wants revenge on Vegeta. Frieza then brings this Saiyan to Earth where they get into a big fight.

If you aren’t familiar with the character of Broly, he’s a fan favorite Saiyan who starred in his own series of Dragon Ball movies. Unfortunately, these movies were never part of the official canon, so we never saw Broly really interact with the series. That changes with this official movie and Toriyama’s blessing as Broly has now officially become part of the show.

I guess the most important thing to this film are the visuals and animation quality. The second half of this movie is essentially one giant fight scene with some fantastic animation. There are so many explosions and punches and flying through mountains and lava going on that it’s a little hard to keep track. The only big detraction I can point out is the use of computer generated 3D models for some of the scenes. The use of 3D models versus hand drawn animation is always disappointing. There were quiet a few of these scenes as well.

The story is surprisingly silly. Don’t expect a serious, overly dramatic plot. It’s just Goku and gang being dumb and fighting this overwhelming opponent. The whole movie is essentially fan service, so don’t expect a riveting story.

Overall, this was a fun movie for a long time Dragon Ball fan. Most importantly, I appreciate the addition of Broly to the Dragon Ball canon and look forward to seeing what they do with this character.
