Cafe Rubio is supposedly a restaurant that the New York Mets often frequent. A friend suggested we eat here and it was pretty good.
The most deceptive thing about this place is that it has a tiny store front, but a huge space inside. There is a bar area, one seating for restaurant service, another seating in the back for more restaurant service and parties, and an elevator that goes downstairs for another party area. They could have like two or three quinceaneras here at the same time.
We ordered some seafood croquettes and chicken croquettes which both came with some salad, they both cost around ten dollars. As for an entrée, I got Surf and Turf, which was shrimp and skirt steak, sautéed with mushrooms and tomatoes, in a wine sauce, for about twenty-five dollars. Everything was okay.
Service was okay, but that’s only because I had native Spanish speakers here with me. The staff here barely speaks any English.
If you do decide to come here and can communicate in Spanish, you should also keep in mind where you sit matters. For example, we chose to sit in the back near a group of twenty who were celebrating a birthday. They were loud, the music was blasting and I almost lost my voice trying to talk to my friend. There are quieter places we could have sat and we probably should have picked on since we mostly wanted to chat.
Overall, this place was okay. I think the fact that the Mets like this place is why it is so successful. Foods all right, but it’s priced like it’s in Manhattan when there restaurant is in Jackson Heights.
