Apex Legends is the new hotness in the battle royale video game genre. It basically combines elements of Fortnight and Overwatch into one battle royale game.

Apex Legends is a battle royale game, which means that a bunch squads of players get dumped onto a map and fight it out until only one squad remains. Squads consist of teams of three and only three, something different from the other competing battle royale games out there. That means that if you have four friends, one of you is being left out. Also, If you have no friends, you will be forced to play with randoms.

As with most battle royale games, players are dropped onto a map unarmed. There are weapons strewn throughout the map that players need to find. Periodically, a circular area of the map is drawn out and if you are not in that circle, you die. That circle periodically gets smaller until only one squad is left alive.

The game is free to play, though there are of course micro transactions. I found the micro transactions to be mostly unobtrusive. Some characters are locked behind pay walls, but you can unlock them with points you earn during regular play. I imagine more characters will be released as time progresses.

The most distinctive characteristic of this game is that you get to pick a class of character that has it’s own set of powers. Some examples include shields, an artillery like bombardment, and opening portals that can teleport you.

One minor thing I really like is the lack of fall damage. You can jump from any height and not get hurt, not matter how high.

I also like the inclusion of pinging. A big problem with online games is player toxicity. Players are often times children who just say the most vile, insulting crap to each other. With pinging, everyone can shut up and play the game. If you want to point something out, you just ping it and place a marker on it. No one needs to waste energy typing or speaking anymore. It’s faster and easier.

Ultimately, the thing that makes this game so fun right now is that it is popular. As with all multiplayer games, a game is only as good as its player base. There are a lot of people playing Apex right now, so you can expect the overall skill level of players to get better. You can also expect to always be in a full game relatively quickly, at least for now. Until that changes, Apex is likely the best battle royale game to play at the moment.
