Red Rooster is one of the more well known, trendy restaurants in New York City. It’s run by celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson. The food here was pretty good.
If you’re coming here on a weekend without a reservation, good luck. This place is undoubtedly a tourist trap. It’s in probably one of the most gentrified areas of Harlem as evidenced by the Whole Foods nearby. A weekend table without a reservation is unlikely.
I ordered the Hot Honey Yardbird for $27.00. It comes with a whole half chicken, some mashed potatoes, pickled onion and collard greens. Unfortunately the serving size of the sides were so small so as to be insignificant.
The chicken itself is huge as it was a half chicken. The chicken was great. It’s just a fried chicken, but the sweet and barely spice coating was fantastic. The white meat portions of the bird were even somewhat juicy, a difficult thing to do as white meat is almost always inedibly dry.
Service was nice, but they are so busy that we often had trouble getting noticed. The interior is stylish and definitely took inspiration from the neighborhood as well as a bit of southern culture.
Overall, Red Rooster was great. I can easily recommend it so long as you have a reservation. I’d recommend going during dinner since the dinner menu has options the brunch/lunch menu does not.
