A Simple Favor is a suspenseful, mysterious crime drama that can almost be classified as a comedy. If you like Gone Girl with a healthy dose of Anna Kendrick style humor and Blake Lively style fashion, then you’ll likely enjoy this movie.
Anna Kendrick plays a single mother who meet Blake Lively’s character, another mother whose son attends the same school as Kendrick’s. The two become friends when tragedy strikes and the story turns into a crime-mystery-suspense-drama with a healthy dose of humor. I don’t want to say anything about the plot since the twists are kind of the main point of the movie.
The story is surprising. There are a lot of twists, but they are mostly predictable if you’re familiar with the crime and romance genres. I still enjoyed these twists all the same because of the tone in which they were delivered.
The tone of the movie is confusing. The most dramatic and suspenseful part of this film is the music. The dialogue is sometimes dramatic, often times hilarious. If they changed the suspenseful music into something comedic, this movie could very easily be considered a comedy. I think this film is a good film to highlight the power of editing, in that a scene can be interpreted in completely different ways depending on how a director and editor decide to set it up.
Overall, I found the movie entertaining. It’s not a masterpiece, but if you enjoy melodramatic romance smut, then you’ll likely enjoy this movie.
