Video Game Review: The Darkness II

Details: Released in 2012. Beat the game in about three hours. Got it for free from http://www.humblebundle.com. Official site is http://www.embracethedarkness.com

Score: 6.4/10

For a game this old, it held up surprisingly well. The Darkness II is a short, fairly adult story about a mob boss possessed by an evil being.

The Darkness II is based on the comic of the same name. It’s about Jackie Estacado, a gangster who is possessed by the Darkness, an evil being. The Darkness gives him supernatural powers at the price of taking control over Jackie, little by little. This game is a direct continuation of the last game, which I didn’t play. Even still, I got enough of the story to enjoy this game.

The story is all right. The ending definitely had me more interested than the rest of the game. There are two endings by the way.

Gameplay consists of your standard first person shooter mechanics. Additionally, there are some skill trees which give you some new powers. I neglected to use powers for most of the game, but when the going got tough, sending out a swarm or sucking on the hearts of enemies for health was useful.

Visually, the game still looks surprisingly good. It’s still dated, but it’s good enough.

The voice acting was very good and the music was also well done.

Overall, this was a fun game that I cannot complain about because I got it for free. I would not recommend people pay money for this game, but if you can get it for free, it’s a fun, short little game to get through. It’s also very violent, so keep that in mind.

Score: 6.4/10

I’m not a huge fan of FPS and the previous game was by far my favorite one to date. I bought it for $4 when I was in high school and that was the best $4 I had ever spent. It’s not the best game in the world, but it’s a quick and fun play! :)
