Video Game Review: Child of Light

Details: Released in 2014. Beat the game in about ten hours. Purchased the game through steam for about five dollars. Played on the PC. Official site is

Score: 6.7/10

Child of Light is a turn based role playing game. It’s pretty fun, if not short lived.

Child of Light takes place in 1895 Austria. A girl wakes up in the mystical land of Lemuria and must figure out how to return home. Along the way she meets friends and discovers that it is her destiny to save the land from a great evil.

The most noteworthy party of this game is the art style. It’s a hand drawn, two-dimensional style with multiple planes. That means there’s lots of stuff in the foreground and the background, but each object looks like it was drawn with pencil. It’s a beautiful style that still holds up today.

The gameplay is nothing special. There’s very abbreviated versions of turn based role-playing games and crafting. If you’ve ever played a Final Fantasy game or any other turn based role playing game, you’ll know what you’re in for.

The music is also pretty good. Not that many tracks, but the ones that are there are good. There is almost no voice acting except some narration.

Overall, the game was fine for what it was. I wouldn’t recommend purchasing the game for more than five dollars. In fact, this game could be skipped. Additionally, there are no multiple endings, only one ending so there’s no reason to replay the game.

Score: 6.7/10
