Anime Review: Megalo Box

Score: 7.4/10

Megalo Box is one of the most unique anime this season. I enjoyed it very much and encourage anime fans to watch this.

Megalo Box takes place in a fictional future where boxing with mechanical enhancements is a popular sport. Enter Joe, an underground boxer living on the fringes of society. Through various circumstances, Joe enters a hugely popular professional Megalo boxing tournament and he does so as the only one without any mechanical enhancements. Now, “Gearless” Joe must endure the dangers of this tournament in hopes of eventually defeating Yuri, the champion who sits at the top.

The first and most noteworthy thing about this anime is the art style. The show is animated in the way that many anime were back in the eighties. It’s a very hand drawn looking style. However, it’s clear that many of the technological conveniences developed since that time period were incorporated as well, making this anime look old and new at the same time.

It’s not just the art style however, it’s also the tone. Everything about this show from the art, to the plot, to the tone are all very retro. It’s very cool to see something both modern and old handled so well.

The action scenes are good a lot of the time. Some times they really aren’t. You need to keep in mind that this story feels like it needed maybe twenty something episodes to tell, but is crammed into around thirteen. The ending did feel like it cut off a little abruptly.

Overall, I enjoyed this show and can easily recommend it to anime fans who enjoyed shows like boxing stories and old anime from the eighties and nineties.
