Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is a spin off from the popular Sword Art Online anime. It has none of the characters from the main show and instead focuses on an largely unrelated cast of characters.

Gun Gale Online takes place in the Sword Art Online universe, which is a fictional near future where virtual reality video games are popular. The story focuses on Karen Kohiruimaki, a girl who doesn’t like how tall she is. To escape the pressures of being an overly tall girl in Japanese society, Karen buys virtual reality headset and decides to distract herself with virtual reality video games. Inside a particular gun oriented game, Karen takes up a new persona and participates in a competition where she learns that the stakes of the competition may be higher than she realizes.

There are around twelve episodes, so it’s not an overly long show. The show moves along at a brisk pace. What I liked about this show compared to the original show is that it is much more lighthearted in tone. It isn’t too serious a plot and there aren’t as high of stakes. There is some life threatening stuff going on, but it’s mostly just some people playing video games and taking it semi seriously.

The animation is okay.

Overall, it’s a fun distraction of a show. Nothing too serious or impressive here.
