As far as I know, China Gourmet has the distinction of being the cheapest Chinese takeout place in Midtown Manhattan… at least between eighth and fifth avenues.
They have your standard Chinese takeout here, like your lo mein, fried chicken wings and french fries, chicken and brocolli, etc. I’ve had a small lo mein (was not small, filled a whole plate) here for around five dollars. I’ve also had a lunch special of General Tso’s chicken that comes with white or fried rice and an egg roll or soup for around seven dollars. Food quality is about the same as any other Chinese takeout place, which isn’t great but if you’ve ever had Chinese takeout or Panda Express before, then you know what you’re in for.
Overall, my favorite Chinese takeout place in midtown purely because of price. What’s amazing to me is that all the Chinese takeout places in New York City have mostly the same menu even though they are not affiliated with each other. When deciding between these places, only two factors matter: convenience and price. If you are in the midtown area around eight avenue, I think China Gourmet beats the price of all Chinese takeout places in the area by a few dollars.
