Anime Movie Review: Kuroko’s Basketball The Movie: Last Game

Details: Released in 2017. Also known as Kuroko no Basuke. Around an hour and thirty minutes long.

Kuroko’s Basketball The Movie: Last Game is the last piece of anime and follows the last piece of manga written by the author for this intellectual property. While not a great anime movie, it provides a satisfying conclusion to the Kuroko no Basuke series above what was established in the manga.

The story picks up after the end of the anime and the manga. Kuroko and Kagami, two exemplary Japanese high school basketball players have defeated all of Kuroko’s former basketball teammates, reconciling the conflicts between them and becoming national basketball champions. A few months later, an American team comprised of professional all-stars comes to Japan to play an exhibition game, humiliating Kuroko and Kagami’s friends and ridiculing the state of Japanese basketball. Kuroko and Kagami must now assemble with the rest of Kuroko’s former teammates, forming the greatest basketball team Japan has ever seen in order to defeat the Americans and regain their pride.

It’s a bit of a ridiculous premise. There are definitely a lot of stupid parts of the movie. The parts where they try to speak English are done poorly and there’s some confusion when they alternate between English and when they use Japanese (the American team does not speak Japanese, but they use it to make the movie flow better for the audience).

However, if you’re a Kuroko no Basuke fan, there’s a lot here for you. Firstly, you get to see the most powerful players all play on the same team finally. That’s something they only ever showed glimpses of in the anime and manga. You also get to see them evolve their abilities even further, which is cool.

The most important thing is that the conclusion in this movie goes further and is more satisfying than what was shown in the manga. It is a little sad, but it provides a definitive conclusion that actually had some real emotion to it.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. If you are not a fan of Kuroko no Basuke, then skip this movie. This is not for you. If you did enjoy this series, then this movie is essential watching and you should go watch it as soon as possible.

Score: 6/10
