I read a lot of bad reviews before watching this movie so I was expecting something pretty bad. Instead, I think The Mummy is a fun film that achieves exactly what it sets out to do.
The film centers on a soldier/tomb raider played by Tom Cruise. In the midst of his thievery he discovers and releases the mummy, an ancient evil that seeks to destroy the world or take it over or something evil. Tom Cruise must now stop this evil, usually by running away from it in a couple of Tom-Cruise-running-away-from-things scenes.
There aren’t any award-winning performances here, but everyone does a fine job. This is your classic Tom Cruise action movie. What you should really be paying attention to is what the actors have to go through for the action set pieces. For instance, there’s a scene where they are in a crashing plane. A quick google showed behind the scenes footage where they actually flew the actors up in one of those planes that then dives to give that zero gravity feeling.
And that’s really what Tom Cruise’s name should represent to audiences: great action set pieces with a lot of jaw dropping stunts. I don’t know how much of this film was CGI and how much of it was practical, but it was fun nonetheless.
Overall, I enjoyed the film. I don’t get the hate for this movie. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do. This is a fun, relatively lighthearted action film.
