Movie Review: Office Christmas Party

Details: Released in 2016. About an hour and forty-five minutes long. Stars Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, T.J. Miller.

I think when you make this kind of extreme movie, you need to take some notes from movies like The Hangover, Superbad, or American Pie. Basically, those movies were a series of extreme comedic, lewd, obscene scenes that increased in degree of extremity with each consecutive scene. The amount of extreme behavior needs to increase and continue to surprise the audience in addition to making them laugh. This film did not do that.

I started watching this movie expecting some crazy stuff to go down. Mostly not crazy stuff went down. It was pretty boring. The jokes mostly fell flat. I didn’t get the same hyped, hilarious feeling I got when watching other comedic, party films that try to get “crazy.”

There are a lot of big names in this film that I like and have enjoyed in other things. This film is proof that a collection of big names does not guarantee a good movie. I think the problem is the writing and directing here. They needed to write some crazier stuff and they needed a director willing to shoot that crazy stuff in a crazy way. This film was frankly just too tame.

Overall, skip this movie. It’s a waste of time.

Score: 3/10
